- Inscription: Beneath this stone lie the mortal remains of SIR ISAAC LYON GOLDSMID Bart. who was born in London January 13th 1778. During many years of his long and active career he held a prominent place in the financial world. And whilst he took part in the chief enterprises of his --- for the development of National resources, his name was also associated with every movement for the social progress of mankind. With him, the agitation for the removal of the civil disabilities of the Jews took its rise and he devoted much time and unwearied labour to the promotion of this great cause which became triumphant a few months before he breathed his last. He was one of the founders of University College London, the first establishment of the kind in England, where all without distinction of creed might receive the advantages of a superior education. He was likewise a munificent patron of the hospital connected with that college and a benefactor to most of the benevolent and useful institutions. In the year 1841 (?) he was created a baronet of the United Kingdom being the first Jew who enjoyed that title and in 1845 Her Majesty the Queen of Portugal in recognition of the eminent services he had rendered to that country conferred upon the dignity of Baron. He died April 1859 in the 82nd year of his age.
