  •  Hoxton Old Burial Ground, London, 1. England, UK

    Notes:
Hoxton Jewish Cemetery: Opened in 1707, the grounds having been purchased by Marcus Moses on 25 Mar 1707.

On the east side wall there was a plaque 'This wall was newly repaired May 30 1781. Joseph Gompertz, Abraham Hart, governors and Rubin Salomon, treasurer'

The cemetery which closed in 1878, was described in 1896 as having no grass and many tombstones (London Burial Grounds 1896 by Mrs Basil Holmes, Fisher-Unwin).

In 1960 The London County Council bought the burial ground. The few remaining tombstones and those buried there, were transferred to West Ham Cemetery.

The re interments are in unmarked graves and the tombstones were laid flat along the main path.

The following entries have been compiled from the translation of epitaphs visible in Dec 1929, by Dyan Mendelssohn of the United Synagogue and from reports in the Jewish Chronicle. These represent just a few of the original 500 graves originally at Hoxton.
