The Hampshire Telegraph on 10 Aug.1840 has "Died in London, Mr.Jacob Levi, 91, Reader of the Portsmouth Synagogue upwards of 40 years, much respected".

From the Hebrew inscription: The Cantors Will Hear and the Musicians Will Understand The one who rests here ?in song? ?sweet as honey? The congregation of Adat Yeshurun in the holy community of Portsmouth?... The holy service of God was his work, marking His name with a full heart ...here the holy congregation? 70 years old was gathered with a good name, old, and of full days the heads of the congregation erected this stone as a witness for generation who was a faithful Cantor and beloved amongst Jews Akiva son of Yaakov Segal from Neustadt passed away on Shabbat 17th Tamuz his deeds [will be] his advocates as he resides... with all those lying here.
